On our journey to Net Zero
A sustainable future is part of the mission at UWCSEA and we have looked at this SEASAC event through a sustainable lens. We have assessed the use of resources to be as efficient as possible and introduced some new initiatives as we consider the impact on the environment now and in the future.
SEASAC Touch Energy Saving Drive
Our objective is to decrease our carbon footprint by 1 tonne of carbon dioxide.
To put emissions into perspective, it's helpful to relate them to more relatable activities.
1 tonne of carbon emissions could power: 120,000 smartphone charges.
This translates to 480 charges for each athlete, equivalent to 1 year and 4 months of daily charging.
Digital declutter drive.
Storing 500 gigabytes of data in the cloud annually, sufficient for numerous photos or several hours of video, would produce approximately 1 tonne of CO2 emissions based on the U.S. Grid’s emission rate.
Our objective is to initiate a digital clean-up. If each athlete removes 4 gigabytes of data from their cloud, collectively we aim to reduce by at least 500Gb, equivalent to emitting 1 tonne of CO2 and so achieve our goal.
Energy saving Lights in the Sportshalls
The recently implemented sportshall lights are equipped with motion sensors, allowing them to dim when there is no movement, thereby conserving energy. UWC is employing technology to minimize energy consumption during events.

Medals
Medal and trophies will be made from local wood to ensure that we are using a renewable resource that generally uses less energy to produce products such as trophies and medals compared to aluminium and plastic and of course is biodegradable. Each medal and trophy will have a sustainable message on to remind us all of our responsibilities.
We have incorporated work of our environmental initiative Raw Beauty who design and create their own soaps.
Sustainabrew Isotonic drink served
SustainaBrew creates low-waste, environmentally friendly drinks. These healthy delicious drinks are hand made by students using ingredients harvested from our gardens. This circular economy model encourages conscious consumption, applying permaculture principles.
Food
We have reviewed the menu to ensure we have high quality nutritious food but also have thought about carbon footprint to purchase as local as possible. We have increased the plant based options to over 50% as we consider the energy used to create and transport the food. Students will order their lunch option in advance for Sunday as we aim to reduce waste. We will measure waste of food of the weekend to assess our efficiency.
No single use plastic
No single use plastic will be used in the event. Students need to use their own refillable drinking bottles for the event as none will be provided.
Transport
We aim to be efficient with transport carrying as many athletes as possible so reduce the number of buses and journeys.
Banners
All banners used are non time stamped and non sport specific so that we can use for multiple SEASAC events.
